All GSC Soccer Activities Suspended (UPDATE #3)

COVID-19 Update (9:30 AM, March 26)

All GSC Soccer Activities Suspended (UPDATE #3)

Gunston Soccer Club Families,

We wanted to take a moment to give you an update on our current situation and to clarify some of the Guston Soccer Club (GSC) communications that have been sent recently in hopes of reducing confusion among our Gunston travel soccer families.

Since our last update, Governor Northam required all schools remain closed through the end of the academic year. Subsequently Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) declared all fields closed until further notice. Our leagues, Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA), National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) and Elite Development Program (EDP), have also provided updates on scenarios they are evaluating based on when our fields might reopen.

As of today March 26th, 2020, the decision to end the Gunston travel soccer season has NOT been made. The GSC travel soccer leadership remain hopeful that, at some point soon, we will resume in-person activities and competition. However, it is important to note that the current situation is very fluid and presents us with a lot of uncertainty.

In the meantime, our staff has remained at work adapting to the situation and developing new and innovative ways to reach our players to focus on their individual development. Although not optimal, we are doing our very best to stay connected, and keep our players engaged and developing through our videos and contests. Additionally, we are evaluating ways to improve tactical understanding and facilitate other aspects of player development through our multi-media platforms.

The cancellation and subsequent refund decision announced by the Gunston Recreation Soccer League on Wednesday, March 25th, 2020, ONLY addresses the spring recreational players that have not yet started their season.

Gunston Soccer Club travel soccer is a yearlong program that is administered separately and is not included in that decision. The reason for this is because GSC travel soccer needs to take into consideration other program components that are based on an annual calendar, such as coaching staff, league play, technology, field maintenance, equipment, state/league fees, etc. Those component costs were already incurred and cannot be refunded and/or will need to be incurred to maintain our readiness for operations for the summer and fall.

We will continue to plan for the remainder of the season and work to be prepared for when the season resumes. Again, the situation is fluid and there are a lot of dependent variables that we need to work through. Thank you for continuing to be patient as we navigate through these uncharted waters.

To quote our leaders, “this is a time for unity.” Together we can overcome our current situation, continue to improve our Gunston travel players, and be prepared to play soccer sometime very soon when it is safe for our entire Gunston family.

Previous Updates (March 12, 2020):

Gunston Soccer Club Families,

As many of you already know, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has canceled all after school activities and use of their facilities until April 12, which coincides with the end of FCPS spring break. This means that our season will be delayed as well.

We haven’t heard from our leagues or Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) yet, but expect them to follow suit and cancel until the middle of April.  We will update everyone as soon as we learn more.

We are hopeful that by April 12 this virus situation will be in a much better state, allowing us to be safe while we interact with others.

Some families have emailed us about refunds. Gunston Soccer Club has postponed but not canceled the Spring season, so this topic is premature to discuss.

In the meantime, GSC recommends we follow all guidance and best practices to mitigate the risk of being impacted by this virus. We are hopeful that this situation will get better quickly so we can go back to living our normal lives and getting our children back on the pitch.

Please look out for each other and, of course, let's do our best to keep our children safe.

Previous Updates (March 12, 2020):

Gunston Soccer Club Families,

At Gunston Soccer Club (GSC), our first concern is to provide a safe environment for our members. As most are aware, COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has taken the world and country by storm.

Following the lead of U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS) and in concert with other area clubs, the GSC Board of Directors have made the decision to immediately suspend all soccer activities (e.g. practice, training, clinics, camps, and matches) until further notice.

The club will continue to monitor the situation, taking into account direction from our local government, USYS, Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA), and others, and make a decision regarding when to resume our soccer activities.

We wish you and your family all the best in health and safety.
